Yearbook Celebration Dinner!

Costing a whopping 2,500 Baht, we ate and ate and ate and ate and ate... you can imagine eh? In thailand, where 20 Baht can get you a meal that'll fill your tummy, we spent 2,500 Baht! haha. It was on the school too - we did such a good job, the Student Administration gave us a 2k++ budget for a celebration dinner! So celebrate we did - in style too... (doesnt need mentioning does it?)

Here are some (a lot) of pictures of our trip! hehehe Pictures were taken courtesy of the little Mju! oh yeah

Here, we're on the pickup truck going to Dairy Home!

Another pic - same shot but with the flash... so we can see the faces.

Pix of the school and testimonials from students!

Breaking news of the year!

Pix from events

The mug shots!

The student council page!

The back cover :D

Sing a new song!

I think most people will agree with me on this - it feels amazing when someone sings a song that you wrote... but it feels even more amazing when people sing a worship song that you wrote with so much passion - even after service! That's what happened to me today and it's still in my head! Gotta try get the copyright for it though, and put it down correctly on sheet music! Will need some help though~

Deanna (the pianist who played with me today) is leaving and I'm feeling sad... today's worship was short of AMAZING and its gotta do a lot with the fact that Deanna's a fantastic musician! Dee - gonna miss you so much! I remember the first time we played together at the Dairy Farm Festival. I was a super freshie then, just 2 weeks into school and I was dumped with the musicians whom I didn't really know. Well, you were a fantastic pianist then and you've improved so much till now - you've made me a better musician too. Thank you!!!

That's it for now :) gotta take a quick shower!! tata!

Just a post :P hehehe~ fake crash... hehe thanks Fiona - for the pic! hehehehe

MC Yearbook

For those who haven't seen the cover and a little bit of what's inside the yearbook, here are 2 pix!

Muak Lek, Saraburi - Life here

MAJOR photo upload! hehehehe! Well, this post is for those who actually wonder how I get around, what I do, where I get my clothes done when I'm lazy and don't hand wash, what goes on around the little town and what the places actually look like! So, a little bit of Muak Lek for you guys!~

This is my bike and next to it is my laundry basket... with dity clothes of course!

A picture of my tank - see the reflection?

My clothes are taken outside for a wash - you put in like... 25 Baht in 5 Baht coins to get the machine to work. It works pretty well too! hehehe~ Cheap washing thats about a dollar for a full load~ No drying though. I've gotta lug it back and hang it out. Today, Doca and I brought our clothes out - so we basically put our clothes there... and went to market!!

The market moves around and today it was kinda close - so it was good! Here's a pic of a chicken-seller :P Dig chicken? hehehe

You can get most anything here from laundry baskets to forks and spoons here! All CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP! hehehe

Cheap slippers too! 20 Baht up!

DVDs... hehehe :P

Clothes too!

You'll see plenty of these people around begging for money - some even prostrate themselves before you in an attempt to get you to give them some money!! It's kinda scary... Took this one secretly!

Muak Lek town has also changed a lot - MOMMY!!! Have a look at this picture!! :D See any differences? hehehe

That's about it for now~ hehehe tata!!

*ahem* This is the president speaking!

*ahem* This is the president speaking! Yes, I was voted in as the International Club's president - president of the International student body *wah - such a "BIG" post*. Wonder why I was voted in... gonna be stressful (evil laff - but who cares? I'm the PRESIDENT). It's a big responsibility and well... looks like I should be up to the task if the other students on campus think I am.

Related to this - at the moment, maybe for just this short while, I've gotten a celebrity status here on campus with both students and faculty because I've managed to churn out a yearbook that's been the best since SAUC started! It's been touted by the weekly newsletter, newsbyte as "looking like an art deco book" and by the marketing department saying that "it's even better than our brochures". I even got to speak and receive an introduction from one of the Vice President's during the weekly Faculty and Staff meeting! Woohoo~ Talk about doing it in style... haha~ The yearbook - not everyone likes it of course, and I've alreay heard some snide remarks - nonetheless, I'm enjoying this little perhaps... 50 days of fame? I know the nurses are insanely happy because the yearbook is out early and they can have their yearbook before they leave to the Bangkok campus (in previous years, the nursing students never did get their yearbooks because they always came late... they'd get it really really really late or never at all because all of them would be stuck here at Saraburi Campus). Lets not let my head get too big...! On to some spiritual stuff!

Tomorrow's worship here at Mission College will be led out by the youth and I'm the worship leader for tomorrow! Been a while since I picked up my guitar for service so tonight I'll be playing away! I've gotta get my fingers to move right again!

The whole service has been planned around Matthew 6, 7 and 8 - the Sermon on the Mount. I actually wrote a song that will be sung thrice in the service that's based on the Sermon on the Mount. The title is "Blessed are you". I hope that the song will be a blessing to the worshippers tomorrow! Hmm... just thinking - I really should restring my guitar - she's dying for new strings!

The day so far has been kinda mundane - studying for examinations; the exam mode hasn't really set in yet and I'm still not really 'awake' to the fact that the examinations begin next week. Realized I made a mistake in an order for PPCP - supposed to deliver an order but I kinda thought it was a self-collect! Darn... Mistakes :( sigh.

Oh yeah! I'll be studying Hebrew next semester - crazy eh? I'm not much of a linguist but I'm still taking language courses - its INSANE! The books cost $$$ too... gotta thank my dad for chipping in to help me get some of the books. I know my friends look for sponsors for their books - my sponsor is my dad and that I wanna tell everyone - I'm proud to have a dad who's so supportive of my studies! Thank you daddy!!!

A little about family - i just read my bro's blogs - Jeremy and Benedict and man... do I miss them both. Jeremy's serving his National Service right now with the SCDF (Singapore Civil Defence Force) and Benedict's in Australia studying to be a doctor! IF you have the time, head down to their blogs - very nice pictures and interesting lives they're leading at the moment~ Mine's kinda mundane as you can see, but I'm trying to spice life up a little~ hehehe :) A little sugar and spice and all that's nice will make nat a nice boy too! *whee*

Still playing with my little Olympus Mju all weather digital camera!~ Wheee! It's a little bundle of joy! haha~ My Oly E-1 will still definitely see a lot of action, but this little Mju will get down and dirty too. *muahaha* Little Oly will walk side-by-side with Big-Brother Oly. I'll post some pictures that this little Oly can do sooN! Maybe start today with Friday market? Who knows... only way to find out is... *drumroll*... for you to check back soon!!! Tata!

Yearbook Launch - my happiness!

The yearbook launch that I anticipated came and I was so happy! Giving the keynote address before showing the school the yearbook for 05/06 and hearing them cheer was so gratifying. The tremendous amounts of hard work has really paid off and I for one, as the editor am totally satisfied.

The picture on the left is the 'frenzy' for collection of the yearbooks - watching the students line up was totally insane! I'd never felt so good in my life - people queuing up to get your work. WOW. hehehehe~ AMAZING! The best part of it all was when they'd smile n show it to me as I walked past.

Most of the students are elated because the yearbook is out before the final examinations, where most people leave straight after their papers end. So this year is special because...

1. The yearbook is out early
2. It's in full color
3. It's got a cool spunky design
4. Their pictures are inside... haha

Wah... haha okay, I've gotta get back down to earth!!! Thnx to my wonderful team, we did it!

The pic on the left - two very very happy guys posing with the yearbook "Perspectives".

Also thinking of getting a new blog skin for my blog~ hmmmmmmm!

Okay, thats it for now! heehehehehe~

Big Fat Greek Exam II

Yeap, tomorrow's another day of parsing with terms like genitive, accusitive, dative, aorist, 1st person, 2nd person etc... i really dislike the parsing bit of greek! UGH! Why! Looks like another day where I'm gonna be slightly lost. Today was good however, the yearbooks came in and I was so happy! Had a look at the yearbooks and I smiled to myself! Yeah! The Student Administration said that it was the best yearbook yet and better still, the printer who printed the yearbooks said that it was the best piece of work that had ever gone through his press (they specialize in yearbooks for schools all over thailand) so he threw in 50 copies FOR FREE! WOW!

Tomorrow's gonna be the launch too and I'll post some pictures of the launch tomorrow! Yeah! :D that's it for now. Gotta take a shower and go catch my Zzzz's.

Slipper Theology

I had a great sharing session with Sherman last night that ran till almost 2:30am in the morning! Talk about deep personal, theological and spiritual issues! It was an excellent night to morning of insight as we shared about theology, personal experiences, reflections on past experiences and mission. There's something that we both share as friends that strikes me hard - not many other Adventist ministers have relationships where they share and grow together spiritually with a non-Adventist! Why is this so? Is it because of doctrinal differences? If anyone dares to say it is, I'd like to say that it would be a total bunch of nonsense! If you're an Adventist minister reading this, do think it over carefully - what you've just read.

Meanwhile, I'd like to encourage you guys to pop by Sherman's blog - this is not an advertisement but a recommendation for some good theological reflection! Here's an excerpt from one of his latest posts:

Just yesterday, a student (who isn't sitting in my class) asked me why he frequently sees me hanging out with my students in shorts and slippers. He said it's a sight seldom or never seen in the seminary. And so I explained my slipper theology to him. Theology is the language of friendship. Theology is a language that is spoken when friends come together to talk about God. If we're not trying to embody the relational nature of God, we have no business talking about God. So I believe that it is in the sharing of life together that real theology takes place. If I am to impart real theology, I must put on my shorts and slippers and open my life to the cultivation of friendships with my students.

Without friendship, I have no theology to speak about. All I have is an ivory-tower conjecture of what God must be like. There will be no collective experience of God's presence in community, or how God works to shape my life through relational agents that I call friends. The Christian faith has always been a communal faith.
But I also realise that opening up my life in this manner and allowing myself to be seen in shorts and slippers places me in a position of vulnerability. I am liable to be misunderstood, and sometimes threatened to be trampled upon or even betrayed. But this only helps me to understand the vulnerable position in which Jesus chose to place himself. Being the seminary lecturer who is seen in shorts and slippers with his students also makes me an odd person, because I am not behaving consistently with the stature that has been accorded to me. It makes people wonder who I am. And admittedly, it sometimes make me wonder who I am too. Or who I'm trying to be.
But it all makes sense in the instance that I hear a student tell me this: "You have not only trained my mind. You have also trained my heart." And I, in turn, am able to tell these students, "Friend, you too have trained my heart". And I realise that I no longer seek to change institutions or established policies. I seek to change myself. That's my ridiculous slipper theology. How about yours?

Okay, that's it for this morning before I skip off to classes! Exams are round the corner so GOOD LUCK to all you guys taking exams!!

Hi Satan... I'm Back!!!!!!

Don't you just love this? hehehe~ Think "Revelation"

Bible Brain Teaser

This goes out to all my Christian friends out there!

Fact: In the story of Joseph (who had the colorful coat given to him by his dad), it is said that Joseph is a type (typologically speaking) of Christ.
Challenge: I personally disagree with this... and I'd like you to find the person who better represents Christ in the story of Joseph. Is Joseph really the main character in the story or is he just a peripheral character? I challenge you!

Btw, for those who didn't know, the story of Joseph is found in Genesis - Dreams start in 37 :) cheers!

Train to Chiang Mai

I'm considering a trip up to Chiang Mai by train after graduation! Possibly with my girlfriend and a few close friends - take the train up, take pictures of the lovely scenery and the bridge over the River Kwai. That would be awesome! For most guys who are used to American terms like roadtrips, this is a roadtrip of some sort - except that it'll be on a train. It might sound silly that a train-ride up to Chiang Mai costs more than a flight there but I guess it's worth, if you're up for the experience - going slow at a silly 50-60km/h on the tracks instead of a speedy 500+ km/h in the air. If all the guys have the dough, I think it'll work out! At the moment we're all still trying to find the money... haha :D

Something new today - Kishen got a haircut!!! For those who don't know, Kishen is my best friend on campus and he's hoping to work in Singapore when he's done studying here at MC. Well, Kishen unfortunately has not been blessed with a lot of hair and he's been using long hair from the side of his head to sorta conceal the big lobang. Well... it looked really messy cos the hair covering wasn't that much either so it had lotsa lobangs. I brought him down to the hair salon today and we had his hair done - short. It looks so good now!!! Had him shave clean too and he looks so much better! Handsome boy Kishen!!! :D

That's it for tonight! :D nites people!

Big Fat Greek Exam

Yup, I'm gearing up for it - the Big Fat Greek Exam! Today's exam will be a mock-up exam, so its not as critical - but I'm trying to make it seem as real as possible cos I wanna do well for my finals. Greek greek greek and more greek - it's still all greek to me; not exactly, but it is difficult and I'm just trying to stress the fact that it is.

Next semester I'll be blogging about Hebrew... ahh... that ancient language :S Grrr! Hahaha... Shouldn't be complaining! Okays, so I woke up about an hour ago, brushed my teeth, took a shower and did my hair, ironed my clothes, hopped into them and got online... so here I am.

Has anyone ever thought about purposefully going out to make someone's day? It just came to me and because I think it's such a good idea, I'm going to do just that today! yeah!!! You all have a good day and that's it for me I guess - for this morning. Oh yeah, my new compact camera is coming today! WHEEE!

Success Theology

Please note that this paper is INCOMPLETE, can be INACCURATE and is ALWAYS CHANGING (hence incomplete) because I believe that a personal theology that is good will never be fixed, just like how we cannot encapsulate God or define Him. We learn more and we adapt as we grow in Christ and learn about him. The word "Theology" basically means: a strategy of teaching or bringing the gospel to people (in your own context). Here's mine - feel free to have a go at it, I'd be most welcome to accept criticisms or praises :) cheers!

PS. I am writing from a point of view of a non-Christian, not a Christian *Methodist/Catholic/SDA etc...

Success is the ultimate goal for most Singaporeans. My theology is being built around the words Success and Achievement because these two words can basically define a Singaporean. Success and Achievement define only the extrinsic part of life and it is pretty much what life in Singapore is all about success and achievements. This theology is geared towards the middle-class citizen as this class makes up a large chunk of the population in Singapore.
The middle-class Singapore citizen is probably unique to Singapore alone. He or she would be making about $1,200 to $2,000 dollars a month, if married, would have a spouse who is working, spends the weekends with friends pubbing/clubbing, probably own a car or a motorcycle for personal transport. On a spiritual note, he or she might believe that there is a God but not be totally committed to the religion because money really is his or her real religion. If there is a national religion in Singapore, it would have to be money and if there is a national church to go along with this religious group, it would be the bank, where the four million Singaporeans trot to everyday to check on their bank accounts, making sure that the interest is growing and that their accounts are fat and healthy. God is usually nowhere in the picture in the everyday life of the average Singaporean. God isnt needed in their personal affairs, religion is an extrinsic entityuntil something happens and it is plain to see that there is nothing their skills, friends or money can do to help them out.

To better understand where I am coming from, let us have a look at what drives Singaporeans to be so kiasu Literal meaning of kiasu is afraid to lose. In this sense, I am using the word kiasu to show that Singaporeans are so goal/target oriented because of the fact that they do not want to lose out to anyone., making them very goal/target oriented. Singapore is a tiny island with little or almost no natural resources. Human resource has been driving the success of Singapores economy. Through the educational system, citizens are trained to be hardworking, goal-oriented, successful money making people from the day that they first enter school. On a more culture-oriented note, I should also state the fact that Singaporeans take pride in not losing face Another Singaporean expression. Losing face carries the equivalent of personal embarrassment or being known to be not as good as someone else. and always being a step above the rest, or usually, the next-door neighbor. At the tender age of ten in primary four, these kids meet their first tuning session to be programmed for success. Students are streamed to different classes according to how successful they are academically. At the age of ten, a student will know where he stands academically among a few hundred other kids his age. The brighterstudents will be put together in one class and the average and slow students will be grouped together likewise. The extrinsic part of life begins to show its apparent importance at this tender age.

Two years later at the age of twelve, students take their PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination). This examination is graded from A for excellent to U for ungraded. Filtering is seen here again same thing in a different form. Grade averages are calculated over a maximum possible score of 300. Students will then use their scores, most of which land withinthe 180 to 230 range to enter a secondary school. These secondary schools can be compared to the streaming mentioned earlier that happens in primary schools. There are the top schoolswhere a score of 260 and up is required to be considered for entrance and the average neighborhood schools which have an easy entry requirement of as low as 170 up.
This is not where the streaming ends though, within these schools, students are once again filtered to various classes according to their grade scores. At a top school, students whose scores fall within270 to 300 are filtered such that one class would have students from the range within 290 to 300, another would have students who fall within the 280 to 290 and such.To get into a prestigious school would be the definition of success for both the student and the parent, and at this age, ultimate success would be getting into the best class in the best school around.

The whole game of whos better Or sometimes, whos worse off is played. Subtle taunting by flaunting successes to friends, neighbors and relatives are common. and who is more successful is played out for the rest of the life of a typical Singaporean, whether at work or at play, kiasuism is present and everyone wants only the best and to be the best because no one wants a loser, no company would take in someone with no academic success, no one wants to be around one who isnt successful in something. Success is far more important than extrinsic happiness, the thing that everyone lusts for would be defined as achieving tangible success climbing up to the top of the corporate ladder, taking home a five-figure salary each month, driving a Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, Bentley or Rolls Royce, living in a huge house or in a condominium with the best facilities around next to downtown, getting the latest in kitchen-ware, having better things than the neighbor next door including a child who is brighter and more talented.

Christianity in Singapore suffers from this whole phenomenon. Christianity is the last thing that people think will bring them happiness because Christians are too busy being kiasu and worrying about everything that religion is excluded altogether. If worrying about religion is not a problem, money, commitment and time problems arise because Christians have to give ten percent of their income to the church, give offerings of money each week, spend time with church work and commit to events; all of which take up precious time and money. The prospect of achieving the six Cs however, overshadows the prospect of finding intrinsic happiness Many Singaporean families and young working adults in the middle-income group tend to place extrinsic happiness on a pedestal. This is sad because it is only after achieving extrinsic happiness that they realize that success has not brought about true happiness. Families break apart, parent-child relationships break down and sometimes, lives end., which is secondary in the minds of Singaporeans, until they realize that extrinsic happiness that comes with success is a big vacant world. In a country that prides itself in its people who have successfully made the nation one of the worlds topthrough literal hard work, one should not even toy with the idea of religion and a God when all the wasted time and effort should be pumped into achieving success in life. (I believe that national success and personal success is very, very different, but most people seem to believe that both are synonymous anyway)

Is the gospel irrelevant in the lives of those who have acquired extrinsic happiness and success in life? We shall dive into the Bible to have a look! Example one: James and John. These two brothers were fishermen. When Jesus called them, the bible says that immediately they left their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired men and went with him. Id like you to notice that these two brothers had hired men. James and John were like CEOs of a company. They hired people to work for them! When one speaks of the title of Chief Executive Officer, people ooh and ahh, some in admiration and others out of envy these two were CEOs of their time! Highly successful, running their own fishing business. Fish was the staple food for the people who lived around the Galilee area and these entrepreneurs went into what the people wanted.Jesus chose successful businessmen with astute business thinking to be part of the team that changed the world! These men were successful and I am sure that they were happy with their lives, but now they were going to have a taste of success with the added spice of real (intrinsic) happiness that can only be found in God!

Paul, the man who spread the Gospel to the gentiles was a successful tent-maker New International Bible Dictionary - Paul, one skilled in the art of making tents that sheltered the Roman army. To put Paul in post-modern times, he would be the equivalent of an entrepreneur who funded his own work; a self-supporting evangelist! Think of the amount of money Paul had to make to support his long distant trips. This was a successful man not just a skilled worker with a business but also a scholar, who studied under Gamaliel, one of the top teachers of his time. This man was skilled and learned and God chose to use him to further his work. Paul found true happiness after he met Jesus on the road to Damascus and he would not speak of anything other than Christ and Christ alonebecause it was the Gospel of Christ that touched his heart.

Another one of the famed twelve, Matthew, was a revenue officer of Capernaum. Matthew wasnt a bum who didnt have a good paying job. The position that Matthew held was one that would have placed him in todays context of a successfulcarrier man; not ranked with the most honest, but ranked along with the likes of prostitutes, thieves and murderers New International Bible Dictionary - Matthew. Im not sure how Matthew slept at night knowing that he was branded along with all the people who were disrespected. Jesus came along and turned his life around! He found true happiness and later in the book of Matthew, we find Jesus dining at Matthews house a strong possibility that Matthew had them dine at his house so that his peers and colleagues might hear of what Jesus had to say and be followers of Christ. Matthew was successful, but true success was not found till he found Jesus.

The Bible tells us that Abraham who left his home when God called him to, taking with him all the possessions they had accumulated and people they had acquired in Haran. Further down in the book of Genesis, we learn how much he had accumulated and acquired. He had acquired cattle and riches from the Pharaoh while in Egypt and it added to what he already had. When his nephew Lot was captured, Abraham led a small army of 318 trained men from his household and pursued the enemy, recapturing what was lost and defeating the enemy. This was not only a rich man but also a wise commander who followed Gods commands and found true happiness to add on to his successes when his son Isaac was born to him. Success runs synonymously with the finding of intrinsic success in the stories of these men. They all achieved success in life which was full and not one with a big gaping hole left to be filled.

Ecclesiastes begins with words that are very shocking but so true Everything is absolutely futile! NET Bible. Ecclesiastes 1:2, ...Absolutely futile! Everything is futile!Reading on, we find that Solomon, despite all his riches, wisdom and glory finds that life is meaningless until we believe in God. In his words, Solomon says that we should fear God and obey all of his commands because it is the whole of man. Anything without God is meaningless. When one gains success but fails to successfully gain eternal life, is it not meaningless? The short time spent in this world to accumulate wealth that will not follow you when you are dead and gone. Even Solomon, had it all. He had the latest and best cars, lots of money, branded clothes, a harem of the most beautiful girls around, friends in high places, unsurpassed human wisdom, charm - he had everything and he realized that without God, he was not truly happy and successful. Would the hallmark of the Singaporeans epitome of success, the six Cs, mark out true success in todays world, both extrinsic and intrinsic? I would like to strongly suggest that it would not, because despite the apparent successes of many Singaporeans, many still face problems in their families, workplaces, at schools and many cannot find peace in themselves, always having to worry about things. The hallmark of success, the sixCs it seems, is only skin deep with nothing more to show when pulled away.

Singaporeans, experts in the game of achievement and success and immersed in what I call the face-saving syndrome and kiasuism should give a chance for the Gospel and play its game of success for a try; before finding extrinsic success and realising that it they need the other part too - just that it's become too late). Climbing the corporate ladder of success and gaining wealth is all part of a successful life that is merely extrinsic (lacking in the intrinsic part of life. If only Singaporeans can put their heart and soul into the word of God and give the Gospel a chance, like they do in attempting to achieve the six Cs, true success will be found, success that is not futile but full of meaning. Success that does not leave one wondering where all the success went when it seemed to have been found.

Guitar Playing!

Okay, this post is dedicated to my bro JEREMY who's starting to play the guitar! I wish him all the best!! :) The guitar looks a little like the one on this post - nothing fancy, a Yamaha CG-160 that I first started with. It looks nothing like this guitar cos it's got volume knobbies stuck on, a 'scar' where something else was once stuck on and also a pickguard that's black. hehehehe

Rock on Jer!!! - nate
